Pita Grill: A Healthy Hoboken Option
Tweet
There are few places where you can find so many good-for-you options under every section of the menu.
Navigating a menu for healthy choices can be difficult. Luckily, Pita Grill makes it pretty easy. It’s a perfect place to find nutritious options without having to look too hard. Not only do they dedicate an entire section to ‘Vegging-Out” but they tout homemade soups, whole-wheat pitas and lean meats among many others.
Some of my recommended healthy picks from my favorite sections would be:
Appetizers:
From Tabouleh to the fish tacos there are a myriad of healthy options to choose from here. Because the portions are larger, you can easily make one or two of these your main meal for a small price!
My Picks:
Hummus with pita on the side – Hummus is a great healthy option. The main ingredient garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas) are chock full of cholesterol-lowering fiber and are a great source of protein. Choose a whole wheat pita and you’ve got yourself a healthy, balanced option!
Vegetable Summer Roll – An easy way to get fresh, crisp veggies, these rolls are not deep-fried like their spring roll counterpart. Instead they’re fresh, crisp and rich in flavor, texture and filling fiber. A good choice to make as an appetizer or a main course.
*Word of warning: Steer clear of the spinach and cheese pie. Spinach is about the only redeeming factor of this baby. The flaky, buttery crust and the feta and ricotta cheeses may taste great, but if you’re going for healthy, this would not be your best choice.
Salads:
These salads are a no-brainer. Filling veggies, lean proteins and healthy fats. Just go easy on the cheese and stick to oil-based vinaigrette dressing over the creamy stuff.
*My pick: The Pita Grill Salad – The dried cranberries add a great burst of flavor when paired with the lean grilled chicken and the numerous veggies. They don’t over-do it on the cheese, but if you don’t want the extra fat, just ask for it sans cheese. They’re very accommodating.
Classic Pitas and Platters:
Most of these classics are healthy options. The meats are lean and grilled and even the “salads” are made with light mayonnaise. Whether you’re craving steak or chicken, you can be sure you’ll end up with a tasty meal filled with veggies that will keep you full for hours. Major Perk? They also offer a full line of Vegetarian choices.
* My pick: Fajita Pita – Whole grains, filling veggies, lean protein and a dollop of fat-free yogurt. A perfectly balanced meal.
East Meets West:
A unique portion of the menu, simply because it’s so different from the rest. It offers a healthy twist on Asian cuisine by using lean meats and whole grain brown rice. Each bowl is loaded with veggies and contains more than enough food to easily fuel you for hours on end.
*My pick: Sesame Ginger Rice Bowl – Grilled chicken is paired with healthful add-ins like red cabbage and scallions served over a nutty brown rice and flavored with a sesame ginger vinaigrette. You can’t go wrong!
The bottom line here is, there are few ways you can go wrong at Pita Grill when trying to eat healthy. By loading up on veggies and making whole grains and lean proteins the foundation, they do a great job of offering a variety of dishes each with their own healthy twist.
